Legal Aid launches fines campaign

Legal Aid NSW has launched a fines campaign to assist people who are unable to pay their fines debt.

Over the next few months, we are targeting communities with high levels of fine debt and disadvantage across the State.

Bring your Bills and Fix your Fines Days encourage people to bring along their paperwork and get help on the spot with their fines and other debts. The aim is to reduce the debt burden for some of the most disadvantaged members of the community in regional NSW.

Our new Work and Development Order (WDO) Service will also provide legal advice and assistance to clients with fines debt. Through it, debtors can help reduce their unpaid fines by a combination of volunteer work for non-profit organisations, committing to drug rehab programs, or signing up to training or life skills courses.

A team of lawyers will work with community organisations to ensure that WDOs become a broadly supported and effective option for people to deal with their unpaid fines.

This exciting new approach to the mounting debt of unpaid fines across NSW is a world first.

Legal Aid NSW is working closely with the State Debt Recovery Office to resolve unpaid fines debt using all the available options.
