Working around the clock at Springwood Disaster Recovery Centre

28 Oct 2013

A team of legal aid lawyers is advising fire-affected residents on insurance claims and financial hardship.

Legal Aid NSW lawyers at the Springwood Disaster Recovery Centre have been providing advice, mostly on insurance and help with replacing lost documents (birth and marriage certificates). Around 90 people attend the centre daily, with 50 of those staying to see agencies. Lawyers have been kept busy, providing around 26 advice sessions daily.

"We saw the vast majority who attended thanks to a very effective intake process. Replacement of documents was the main issue," says Julie Maron. "We have identified two systemic issues and resolved one already. We are working on the other issue and have resolved it with two of the four insurers involved."

On Friday, Premier Barry O'Farrell visited the DRC, thanking the legal aid team for its work.
