OBJECTIVE

To promote access to justice through early intervention and prevention and better targeting of legal assistance to disadvantaged people


ACTIONS

  • Implement key actions for 2013-14 from the Legal Aid NSW Reconciliation Action Plan 2013-2015
  • Pilot and evaluate the civil law check-up tool in targeted locations to reduce exits to homelessness and disadvantage
  • Develop new early intervention legal assistance services for the child protection system before matters reach court
  • Develop new initiatives to enhance legal assistance services in response to the Legal Needs Survey with a focus on increasing access to justice for people with disabilities
  • Conduct a second trial of a duty and advice service for defendants in ADVO matters and conduct the evaluation in partnership with BOCSAR

OBJECTIVE

To support and develop our people and improve our systems to meet organisational goals


ACTION

  • Develop and implement an Aboriginal Employment and Career Development Strategy
  • Progress the approved recommendations of the post-implementation grants management system and case management system reviews
  • Finalise and implement a framework to establish individual plans for all staff at Legal Aid NSW
  • Implement a program for managers to support health and wellbeing and a respectful workplace for staff
  • Update current system to improve the management of information and knowledge across Legal Aid NSW legal practice

OBJECTIVE

To pursue excellence, innovation and efficiency in legal service delivery


ACTIONS

  • Develop and pilot time recording and reporting systems
  • Pilot an expansion of civil law advice and duty services to targeted Tribunals
  • Implement initiatives in State Government reforms in relation to the law of bail
  • Lodge appeals for prisoners arising from the Muldrock review in all matters where legal aid has been granted
  • Improve the collection of contributions by clients towards the cost of their legal assistance
  • Implement a new Diversity Action Plan that promotes inclusiveness and diversity to improve client service and support for staff
  • Review the outcomes of the review of the National Partnership Agreement on Legal Assistance Services (NPA) and contribute to negotiations for a new NPA
  • Use mobile technology, and in particular, web conferencing technology with rural and remote service partners, to enhance the delivery of legal services

OBJECTIVE

To build strong, effective service partnerships to respond to the legal and non-legal needs of our clients


ACTIONS

  • Develop strategies in partnership with the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) that include referral protocols to support the delivery of legal services to Aboriginal clients
  • Develop a Legal Aid NSW state-wide disaster recovery response plan in consultation with the Ministry for Police and Emergency Services and the legal assistance sector
  • Lead the justice cluster in developing a preliminary service delivery model for young people with complex needs
  • Develop an initiative with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to reduce committals for trial and increase early pleas of guilty where appropriate
  • Undertake further work with the Department of Family and Community Services to improve responsiveness to client needs in family law matters through improved collaboration
  • Implement a pilot for the Independent Children's Lawyer panel and one other panel, to share practice-based resources with the private profession and develop a strategy to expand shared resources across all panels
  • Collaborate with another government service such as Health or Centrelink to integrate legal service delivery with that service
