Accessible web design

Listening to web pages (ReadSpeaker)

ReadSpeaker allows the text on this website to be read out loud to you. It provides assistance if you have trouble reading text online. By having the text read out loud to you, you can understand the information on the website more easily. This makes the website more accessible and more pleasant to visit. As a user you don't have to download anything. You simply click the listen button and the reading starts automatically.

How does it work?

You can also highlight any words on the page to see the listen button.

When you click the listen button, ReadSpeaker will take a moment to load and will then automatically start reading the text of the web page, or just the text you selected, out loud.

In the player you can:

  • Play/pause: Space bar
  • Stop: Esc key
  • Increase volume: Up arrow or the + key of the numeric keypad
  • Lower Volume: Down arrow or the – key of the numeric keypad
  • Fast forward: Right arrow
  • Rewind: Left arrow

In the Settings tab you can control the reading speed and other settings.

To start the ReadSpeaker player using keyboard controls:

Internet Explorer: Hold down the ALT key, press L, release both keys then press ENTER.
Firefox: Hold down both SHIFT and ALT plus L.
Chrome: Hold down both SHIFT and ALT plus L.
Safari: Press the CTRL or Control key together with L.
Opera: Pressing SHIFT and ESC together lists all access keys available on the page. You then press the key. So to start ReadSpeaker on a site you go SHIFT ESC, release them then press L.
