Free legal advice clinics announced for Lithgow

26 Oct 2020

Legal services in Lithgow are to be significantly expanded from this month with the start of a new fortnightly advice clinic.

Funded by Legal Aid NSW and staffed by private practice lawyers, the clinic will cover criminal, family and civil issues.

Peter Ringbauer, from Legal Aid NSW, says Lithgow was identified as an area of need because of its distance from existing services.

He said services would not be subject to a means test, but that booking was essential.

“We identified particular need for advice on criminal list days and for family law matters in the Lithgow area,” he said.

“There will be six 30-minute appointments available every fortnight, and they’re expected to be popular, so early booking is highly recommended.

“I would like to warmly thank the venue, Lithgow Information and Neighbourhood Centre, for agreeing to host the clinics.”

The clinics were organised after lobbying from the Elizabeth Evatt Community Legal Centre in Katoomba.

Managing Principal Solicitor Arlia Fleming, said the clinics would complement the existing services offered by the centre by providing additional legal coverage, especially in criminal law.

“We are grateful to Legal Aid NSW for supporting this clinic and also to Lithgow Court Registrar Gail Chambers who has also been instrumental in this project,” she said.

Help will be available for a wide range of issues such as:

  • going to court,
  • apprehended domestic violence orders (ADVOs),
  • fines and traffic offences and driver licence suspension,
  • debt and money,
  • car accidents,
  • family law and divorce,
  • buying goods and services,
  • Centrelink and NDIS.
