Work and Development Order Scheme wins 2019 NSW Premier's Award
7 Nov 2019
It was a big night for Legal Aid at the 2019 NSW Premier’s Awards.
The Work and Development Order (WDO) Scheme, a partnership between Legal Aid NSW, Revenue NSW and the Department of Communities and Justice, won the team section for Tackling Longstanding Social Challenges.
Our Civil Law Service for Aboriginal Communities was also a finalist at the Awards, held on 6 November 2019.
The WDO Service is a world-first scheme – since copied across Australia – that has transformed the lives of more than 50,000 people, waived $185 million in fines, and initiated more than 145,000 WDO activities.
The scheme encourages people to undertake activities that can turn their lives around, and pay off their outstanding fines in the process.
The real-life impact of the scheme can be seen in this short video.
