Immigration Service
Who we are
The Immigration Service is a specialist service of Legal Aid NSW. We provide free legal advice, assistance and representation about refugee law and other immigration matters.
Who we help
We can assist people who want a visa to live in Australia, or if they have questions about their immigration status in Australia. We can also give advice to people who want to sponsor family members to live in Australia.
How we can help
Advice
We give free independent advice about most family, refugee and humanitarian visas; temporary visas including bridging visas and visitor visas; resident return visas; and Australian citizenship.
We also give advice on detention, removal, cancellation procedures and exclusion periods.
We cannot give advice about: Economic Stream Migrations, Retirement visas, withdrawal of sponsorship or assurance of support, or Student visas.
Visa applications
In some circumstances lawyers at Legal Aid can help a person lodge their visa application if they are disadvantaged. We can attend your interview with the Department of Home Affairs.
Representation
We can represent you in court if you are eligible for legal aid.
Education
We give talks for community groups and community workers on topics like:
- Refugee and humanitarian visas;
- Family visas (partners, children, parents, carers);
- Family Violence provisions.
