Practical Legal Training and Work Placements

Legal Aid NSW is committed to supporting and encouraging law students to meet their practical legal training (PLT) obligations by providing students with an opportunity to:

  • gain experience working in a legal practice
  • learn about working in the public legal assistance environment
  • develop new legal skills and improve work-related skills and knowledge about the resolution of real-life legal problems
  • increase understanding of the work involved in delivering legal services to socially and economically disadvantaged people
  • have contact and interact with Legal Aid NSW clients

Legal Aid NSW has arrangements in place with a number of Universities in NSW. These arrangements usually involve an agreement between the University and a local Legal Aid NSW office, to offer placements to PLT students.

You can check with your University to see if there is an arrangement in place with a local Legal Aid NSW office and find out from the University how to apply.

If your University does not have any arrangements in place with us, you can also apply directly to Legal Aid NSW.
