Immigration Service

Legal Aid NSW specialist service.

The Immigration Service is a specialist service of Legal Aid NSW. We provide free legal advice, assistance and representation about refugee law and other immigration matters.

We can assist asylum-seekers and refugees as well as people who have a problem with their visa and people who have questions about their immigration status in Australia. We can also give advice to people who want to apply for Australian citizenship.

Advice

We give free independent advice about:

  • protection visas
  • immigration issues relating to family violence
  • visa cancellations
  • detention and removal from Australia
  • Federal Court matters
  • Australian citizenship.

In some circumstances, we can also give advice on sponsoring family members to come to Australia.

We cannot give advice about:

  • economic stream visas (including employer sponsored and other work visas, retirement visas and Global Talent visas)
  • visitor visas (including working holiday visas)
  • student visas
  • withdrawal of sponsorship or assurance of support.
Visa applications

In some circumstances lawyers at Legal Aid can help a person lodge their protection visa application. We can attend your interview with the Department of Home Affairs.

Representation

We can represent you in court if you are eligible for legal aid.

Community Legal Education

We also give talks for community groups and community workers on topics like:

  • Refugee and humanitarian visas
  • immigration and family violence
  • family visas (partners, children, parents, carers)
