How to apply for a role

This process explains the steps involved when you apply for a role at Legal Aid NSW.

Found a job that’s right for you in our open roles? Select ‘apply’ and then follow the prompts to submit your application.

Once applications close, all eligible applications are reviewed. Your application is then assessed by the Hiring Manager and selection panel against the essential requirements, skills, knowledge and experience required for the role.

If shortlisted, you’ll be invited to an interview with the Hiring Manager and selection panel. Your interview will include structured behavioural questions and may be held in person or via Microsoft Teams. You may also be asked to complete a role related assessment such as a work sample, presentation, skills test or psychometric assessment.

If applying for a Talent pool role, you may be invited to an assessment centre involving a mix of practical and group activities.

Depending on the role, you may be required to complete pre-employment checks such as:

  • reference checks
  • working with children checks
  • criminal history record checks
  • right to work in Australia checks
  • qualification checks, and
  • conduct service checks.

Once the selection decision is finalised, we contact the preferred candidate with a verbal offer of employment, subject to successful completion of pre-employment checks. We also discuss any flexible work arrangements or workplace adjustments.

If you accept, you’ll be issued with a formal letter of offer.

If you’re placed in a talent pool, you may be contacted about future roles over the next 18 months.

After you accept your offer and your pre-employment checks are cleared, the Hiring Manager will contact you to plan your first day and support a smooth onboarding experience.

You’ll be required to complete a series of online forms, including a Tax Declaration and providing your banking/payroll information and contact details.
