Care and Protection: Representing Parents training module

This module provides private lawyers with an overview of the stages in care and protection proceedings and its associated legislation and case law.

Overview

This training module will prepare new panel lawyers working in care proceedings with its provision of specific and relevant knowledge of the legal issues and practical skills to use when working with and advocating for parents in care proceedings.

Learning outcomes

By completing this training module, participants will:

  1. understand the vulnerabilities of parents within the care and protection jurisdiction
  2. be equipped with skills and techniques to able to provide high quality representation to these vulnerable client
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the various stages of a care and protection matter including interim orders, establishment, placement and the final orders able to be made by the Children’s Court
  4. have more confidence in both written and oral advocacy when representing parents in care and protection proceedings, and
  5. be equipped with skills to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families are provided with high quality and culturally appropriate representation.
